You don’t need a lot to get started, but there are some essentials, and a few others that will really help.

non-negotiable

A Computer

While not strictly essential, we highly recommend using a Mac (if you can’t afford a desktop, a laptop is fine).

Paper

Ideally a sketchbook you really connect with, but all you really need is something to draw on.

A Pen/Pencil

We have a real thing for Microns, but a #2 pencil will get the job done.

Adobe Creative Cloud

Yes, it’s expensive. Yes, you need it. Students may be eligible for a discount.

A Wacom Tablet (or comparable)

This makes precision work and illustration so much easier and can be purchased relatively inexpensively.

An iPad (or comparable)

iPads make presentation a breeze, and are widely recommended by professionals and professors for showing off your portfolio. They also let you test how responsive your sites are.

A Printer

While you don’t really need one (especially if your work is mostly digital), seeing your designs on paper can give you quick perspective, and marking up on real paper is a great thing.

An X-Acto Knife (or comparable)

If you work mostly in print an X-Acto knife is be amazing for building models. Don’t forget to get a pad as well!
