No matter how good an eye you have and no matter how little regard you have for the rules (tbh we’re right there with you), a solid knowledge of design theory and practice is never a bad thing. Not only do many guidelines exist for a reason (helloooo white space) but, as the clichéd adage goes, you need to know the rules in order to break them. Or at least in order to break them well.
